About air fryers

Air fryer manuals are some of the most useful documents on this site, because the appliance category is new enough that owners genuinely don't know what they're doing yet. Every manual explains the preheat behavior (some units preheat automatically, some require a manual cycle), the basket-shake prompt that midway through cooking, and the temperature-and-time chart for common foods like fries, wings, fish, and frozen items. The chart is the page worth bookmarking — it converts conventional oven temperatures and times into the air-fryer equivalent, which is roughly 25 °F lower and 20 percent shorter. Combination units that pair an air fryer with a pressure cooker (such as Instant Pot's Duo Crisp line) include a dual-lid procedure that determines whether you're crisping or pressure-cooking; getting that wrong is the most frequent support call.

Frequently asked questions about air fryers

Do I need to preheat my air fryer?

Most modern air fryers reach cooking temperature within 2–3 minutes and don't strictly require a preheat for most foods. Preheating helps with foods that benefit from immediate searing (steak, chicken thighs) and with frozen foods that you want to crisp rather than defrost. The manual linked above will list which presets include a built-in preheat phase.

Why does my food come out unevenly cooked?

Air fryers rely on hot-air circulation around every surface, so overcrowding the basket is the most common cause. Spread food in a single layer with space between pieces, and shake or flip halfway through. For larger batches, cook in two rounds rather than one packed basket.

Can I use aluminum foil in my air fryer?

Yes, with caveats. Foil is fine on the basket floor as long as it's weighted down by food (a loose sheet can fly into the heating element). Avoid covering the basket holes — that defeats the air-circulation that makes air-frying work. Parchment paper designed for air fryers is a safer alternative.

How do I clean my air fryer basket?

Let it cool completely, then wash the basket and crisper plate with warm soapy water and a non-abrasive sponge. Most baskets are top-rack dishwasher safe but hand-washing extends the non-stick coating's life. Wipe the inside of the cooking chamber with a damp cloth — never submerge the main unit.

Is air-fried food really healthier than deep-fried?

It's lower in fat — air fryers use 70–80% less oil than deep frying — but the cooking method itself doesn't make food intrinsically healthy. The same nutrition guidelines apply: vegetables and lean proteins benefit most from air-frying, while breaded and processed foods are still discretionary even cooked this way.
